As a part of the Orlando Magic High Performance staff, the role of the Applied Sports Scientist/Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach will aim to creatively collect, input, analyze, monitor, and develop reporting structures and visualizations surrounding athlete data to help drive the health, wellness, and performance initiatives for our basketball players. This position will also assist in the weight room, as needed, alongside our two Strength and Conditioning coaches. The role will break down to: 70% applied sports scientist and 30% strength and conditioning coach.

What the Applied Sports Scientist/Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach role will do:

  • Utilize strengths in applied sports science and strength and conditioning to support Orlando Magic and Lakeland Magic basketball players’ health, wellness, and performance
  • Management and oversight of all high-performance sports technology systems and platforms housing Magic player data, including implementation and onboarding of new technology
  • Will oversee the maintenance and ongoing development of our Athlete Management System platform and monitor for consistent and accurate API data integrations
  • Administer assessments or data collection surrounding GPS/local body positioning tracking, cardiovascular function, strength and power diagnostics, biomechanics, neuromuscular activity, and recovery
  • Calibration, maintenance, and upkeep of the performance staff’s sports technology, testing devices, and wearables, including managing all processes surrounding athlete wearables
  • Responsible for the collection, consistency and reliability of all testing and data collection procedures to ensure accurate performance insights
  • Provide timely analysis and interpretation of athlete performance, practice, and game data to our high-performance group via updates, reports, and visualizations on players.
  • Create strategies and projects to address key performance-based questions on an individual athlete level
  • Meet consistently with our strength and conditioning staff on how to best support and guide athlete physical preparation. Will be asked to assist in the weight room or with warmups as needed
  • Communication with athletes on their performance insights as directed by the head strength and conditioning coach
  • Assist in injury rehabilitation cases by collaborating with performance staff on return to play benchmarks and carrying out programs and monitoring as needed
  • Assist in strength and conditioning programs for athletes that may not be traveling with the team
  • Support the Magic’s G league team, the Lakeland magic, in data collection and monitoring strategies
  • Present/ Educate/ Mentor to staff as asked by the Director of High Performance and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach
  • Participate in corporate partnership obligations and possible speaking engagements as needed by the Director of High Performance
  • All other duties assigned

What the Applied Sports Scientist/Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach needs to have:

  • Graduate degree in Sports Science, high performance sport, Exercise Science, Physiology, Kinesiology, Biomechanics, physical therapy, or other related academic field
  • CSCS certification in good standing and proven experience as a strength and conditioning coach
  • 5+ years working in sports related environment
  • Previous interdisciplinary work geared towards functioning well in a high-performance staff setting
  • Knowledge of athletic energy systems and demands surrounding the sport of basketball
  • 2+ years experience in either R or Python (Intermediate level proficiency)
  • 1-2 years experience creating visualizations with data
  • Experience designing and maintaining comprehensive data sets for routine and ad-hoc analysis
  • Experience with different data structures, automating workflows, data cleaning and transformation
  • Proven experience with descriptive and inferential statistics, including summary statistics, linear and logistic regression, and hypothesis testing
  • Experience querying relational databases a plus
  • May be needed to travel occasionally (0-6 weeks per year) with the team during the regular season and/or off-season as scheduled by the Director of High Performance
  • The want to be innovative, collaboratively work with, and effectively communicate with a group of 11 performance staff members
  • Ability to work independently to fulfill sports science projects, but also a willingness to collaborate with our analytics team on inter-group or magic organization projects
  • Ambition and curiosity to stay current in the latest research, technologies, and best practices surrounding athlete performance
  • Dynamic and social personality, as you will be in the gym and weight room setting throughout the day interacting with players, staff, and coaches
  • Excellent presentation skills, delivering clear and concise information
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office products and other related computer skills as required
