Summary:

Reporting directly to the Sport Science Manager, the ML Sports Scientist will play an integral role in the development and management of player assessment and monitoring practices as well as the collection, management, and interpretation of on-field performance and injury data for the New York Mets Major League roster.

This role will work closely with the Sports Science Manager, to develop efficient systems that maximize player talent and readiness as well as undertake longer term research projects and planning to maximize the club’s needs. 

The Performance Technology Department prides itself on its ongoing internal education and research programs and growth-minded and collaborative staff.  This role will be suitable for a skilled Sports Scientist looking to expand their expertise, leveraging large datasets in a highly dynamic, collaborative, and progressive environment.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work daily within the major league clubhouse, regularly integrating and meeting with medical, reconditioning, performance, and nutrition teams.

  • Analyze performance, medical, in-game, and injury data to better understand interrelationships regarding player optimization and availability.

  • Regularly travel with major league team to road series to provide sports science support.

  • Implement, execute, and report on external and internal workload monitoring systems across pitching, hitting, and fielding.

  • Meet regularly with the Major League Manager and field staff to review player status and present structured or ad hoc research outcomes.

  • Support performance technology systems through database management, technology maintenance, and regular calibration.

  • Regularly collaborate with biomechanics and larger performance technology team to deliver player reviews and research insights.

  • Work with reconditioning staff to tailor return to performance plans for athletes, leveraging both internal and external research/tools to develop individualized programming.

  • Regularly meet with players to discuss ad hoc requests, research, or performance reviews surrounding the optimization of athlete performance and readiness.

  • Meet weekly with the Sports Science Manager.

  • Meet intermittently with team doctors and HSS medical staff.

  • Collaborate with the Performance Technology team in regular meetings and research initiatives.

  • Collaborate with the biomechanics staff in analyzing markered and markerless motion capture data. 

  • Utilize and evangelize Mets performance technology reporting systems across the major league staff.

  • Supplement and support strength and conditioning and reconditioning program execution as needed, providing coaching or biofeedback on training outcomes.

 

Qualifications:

  • B.S./B.A. in Sports Science, Biomedical Engineering, Physical Therapy, Computer Science, or another related field.

  • M.S. in Sports Science, Biomechanics, Data Science, or another related field, preferred.

  • 1-3 years’ experience in a professional sports setting.

  • Strong visual, design, and presentation skills.

  • CSCS Certification required.

  • CPSS Certification preferred.

  • Experience working with athletes in a strength training environment.

  • Experience working with GPS sensors.

  • Experience working with Force Plates.

  • Experience analyzing MSK and ROM data on athletes.

  • Experience developing statistical models in R.

  • Software programming proficiency in R, Matlab, SQL, or Python.

  • Experience analyzing Biomechanics data, a plus.

  • Experience developing high-fidelity data analytics reports.

  • Up to date knowledge of latest trends and leading practices in athlete development and rehabilitation, preferred.

  • Strong understanding of strength and conditioning theory and programming, preferred.  

  • Working understanding of common baseball technology and data, preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills with coaches, athletes, and staff.

  • Excellent ability to provide oral and written updates on the readiness status of athletes.

  • Innovative and creative approach to work and problem solving.

  • Evidence of continued professional development and education (workshops, accreditations, etc.)

  • A positive, friendly personality with a passion for assisting others in achieving their goals.  

  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally.  

  • Must be able to work unconventional hours.

Salary Range: $80,000 - $120,000
