Position Summary:

The Director of Marketing and Communications is primarily responsible for developing the strategy and execution of all marketing efforts (both paid and earned), all strategic communications, media relations, public relations and media operations management relating to Augusta National Golf Club, the Masters Tournament and the Masters Tournament Foundation (“MTF”)-supported initiatives, which include the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, Latin America Amateur Championship, Drive, Chip and Putt and Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

The Director of Marketing and Communications will also directly supervise department/staff, while carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Club’s policies, procedures, and applicable laws. Responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with the Chairman, Executive Director and the Leadership Team to establish internal and external messaging strategies.

  • Develops the strategy and executional tactics for the marketing, communications and brand development of the Masters Tournament and the MTF supported initiatives.

  • Manages business relationships with agencies and partners that assist with research, marketing and communications activities.

  • Interfaces directly with the media and manages all press building operations for the Tournament and Foundation events. Acts as the liaison between the press and the Chairman, Membership, Leadership Team and/or event officials.

  • Prepares the Chairman for all speaking and media obligations.

  • Advises the Chairman, Media Committee Chairman, Media Committee and Leadership Team on all matters relating to the press, media trends and any news coverage relevant to the Club, Tournament and/or Foundation initiatives.

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for crisis communication planning and deployment.

  • Establishes policies and procedures for media operations, media relations and media accreditation. Acts as the primary contact and resource for the Media Committee, contractors, volunteers and event support staff.

  • Works closely with the Content Development team to coordinate marketing messages across all media platforms and support the digital and official broadcast partners in determining timely, accurate and compelling storytelling.

  • Assists in brand development and marketing. Ensures consistent messaging, style and voice across all forms of public-facing media. This includes serving as editor of external printed publications, video productions, etc.

  • Manage operations, activities and assignments associated with the Club Historian. Provides strategic vision to leverage archival assets to help tell the rich history of the Club and Tournament to avid and new audiences alike.

  • Cultivates peer-to-peer relationships with representatives at golf’s governing bodies and other major sports institutions to maintain a measured spirit of collaboration.

  • Maintains departmental budgets, including effective payroll allocation and overseeing Press Building capital improvement projects.

  • Accountable for hiring, performance management and training and development for the Marketing and Communications team.

  • Oversees development for all direct reports, while identifying skills and capability gaps, and work to coach employees through development opportunities.

  • Performs other duties deemed by the Chairman and Leadership Team to be an integral part of the job.

Qualifications, Skills and Education Requirements:

  • 10+ years’ experience in journalism, public relations, marketing or communications.

  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience.

  • College degree required preferably in Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, or similar field.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in order to effectively communicate with the Chairman, Membership, Leadership Team, press, public and employees.

  • Deep knowledge of the game of golf, an understanding of its traditions and history, and an acute awareness of Augusta National and the Masters Tournament’s position within the sport.

  • Computer skills to include word processing, spreadsheets, database programs and the Internet.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and/or successfully completes the Club’s internal motor vehicle training program.

  • Valid Passport or the ability to obtain a Passport.
